New 360 photo from the Kodak Orbit360 looks impressive!

Image
Here's a new 360 photo from the highly anticipated Kodak PIXPRO Orbit360 from Kevin Cruz, and it looks pretty impressive! The Kodak PIXPRO Orbit360 is a new 360 camera with a unique asymmetric lens design, allowing it to function as three different cameras: an ultrawide, a hemispherical camera, or a fully spherical camera.  One of its lenses is the same as that of the Kodak PIXPRO SP360 4K, which I found to have the best overall video quality in last year's 4K video comparison .  At the same time, having both lenses in the same camera makes it much easier to shoot and process photos and videos.  This combination of convenience and image quality is why the Orbit360 is one of the most highly anticipated 360 cameras in 2017. A few weeks ago, Kodak Orbit360 beta tester Kevin Cruz shared sample videos .  Now he has posted a 360 photo from the Orbit360: The 360 photo looks quite impressive in its detail and dynamic range, especially on the smaller front lens (the one facin...

First Yi 360 VR 5.7K video sample posted! Preorders now open at B&H!

Image
The first 5.7K sample from the Yi 360 VR camera has been posted!  Check it out!  Also, B&H is now accepting preorders ! Here's the sample, posted by Sami Luo : OBSERVATIONS The detail is amazing for a 360 consumer camera, with noticeable improvement compared to 4K.  Even with YouTube's high compression, you can see the difference in the plate numbers and front grills of the cars here (click for full resolution). left: 5K.  right: 4K You can pixel peep here (click for full resolution): 4K 5K In terms of optics, the sharpness appears excellent, with consistent sharpness almost throughout the field of view, except right at the stitch line. There seems to be no  chromatic aberration or purple fringing whatsoever.  See the lights through the windows of this building: Stitching is not perfect.  For nearby objects, the stitching is quite noticeable.  You can only do so much about parallax stitching error when lenses are not that close to each other. ...

Xiaomi Mi Sphere 360 first impressions II: unboxing, sample video, stabilization

Image
In this post, I continue my first impressions of the Xiaomi Mijia Mi Sphere 360 camera.  This time, I'll present an unboxing a sample 360 video, and a demo of the Mi Sphere's realtime stabilization! First, here is an unboxing video: Now here is a sample 360 video from the Mi Sphere.  For this video, I stabilized the Mi Sphere using the Guru 360 gimbal. I did not edit the sound so you can hear the audio recording quality from the Mi Sphere.  Please note that the Guru 360's motor emits an audible sound, which can be heard in the video. I think the video looks very detailed (sufficiently so that even though its 3.5K video resolution is technically lower than 4K, it looks at least as detailed as 4K videos from competing cameras).  One issue is that there is a slight difference in color between the front and rear lenses.  I don't know if Xiaomi will address this issue.  Another issue is that the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. In the meantime, I al...

Low light sample videos from Detu F4, a 6k 360 camera

Image
The Detu F4 is a 360 camera with up to 6k resolution (or 4k @ 60fps).  Check out a low light sample 360 video from tech vlogger Steve Shew : The video looks pretty clean in indoor light: In lower light, the video is still clean (without noticeable noise) but also has much less detail beyond a short distance.  In the screenshot below, you can see that the grid lines on the floor become mushy as you look farther beyond.  This is probably from aggressive noise reduction. If you want to see more videos from the Detu F4, check out Steve Shew's YouTube channel . \ RELATED POSTS: Sample user video from Detu F4 Global premiere of Detu F4 8k 360 Camera Detu F4 world premiere on May 18 New sample 360 photos and videos from Detu F4 Detu F4: 360 camera with 8k 24fps and 4k 60fps
