Virb Edit is the best free 360 video editor, with features not even included in paid apps

Image
Virb Edit is a remarkable 360 video editor, with features not even included in  some paid software,  and it's free! Virb Edit is Garmin's video editing software for its action cameras.  They updated it for the Virb 360 to add features specifically for 360 video editing, and they did an incredible job! - Add titles anywhere in your 360 video.  Adding titles to 360 video is a little tricky because if you simply overlay titles on the video, they will look warped as you move higher or lower from the 'equator' of your 360 video.  With Virb Edit, you can add titles that will automatically be mapped to your 360 video, keeping the normal proportions of the text no matter where you place them.  Even Adobe Premiere Pro doesn't do this (you need a plug in)! - Change the heading .  You can change the heading of the video (the view that a viewer first sees, assuming they are looking "forward").  This setting is under Stabilization ... 10 cool features of the Garmin Virb 360 you might not know about

Image
The Garmin Virb 360 , Garmin's 5.7K 360 camera, is due to be released within the next couple of weeks.  It is quite expensive at $799 but it is the most feature-rich 360 camera I've seen for consumers.  You may already know that it is waterproof, has gimbal-like image stabilization (spherical stabilization) , 360 surround sound, and voice control for hands-free operation.  Here are  10 other cool features of the Virb 360 that you might not know about (in no particular order). 1.  Remote wake up. The Virb 360 is one of the few 360 cameras that can be remotely turned on from standby (two others are LG 360 Cam and Nikon Keymission 360).  Let's say you are recording a long event and you only want to capture the highlights. With this feature, the Virb can remain off while you wait for the action from a distance.  When the moment comes, you can turn on your Virb remotely to begin recording. This feature does sip the battery on standby, which is wh...

Stabilized aerial 360 video with Garmin Virb 360

Image
Here are a couple of stabilized aerial 360 videos from the Garmin Virb 360! The Garmin Virb 360 is the latest 360 camera to feature image stabilization that keeps the horizon level, just as if it was on a stabilized 3-axis gimbal. Here's one video: Here's another: The videos look impressive, and I'm very much looking forward to the Virb 360.  In the meantime, if you're interested in getting one, don't forget to check my post on 12 things you should know before ordering the Virb 360 . The Garmin Virb 360 is  available for preorder on Amazon  or  B&H Photo . Besides the Virb, there are a few other options for stabilization, as discussed in this post . OPTION 1 . Use a stabilized gimbal. The two most affordable gimbals for 360 cameras are: Guru 360 ($299):  https://goo.gl/vMCD8l Feiyu G360 ($349 or $359 with extension handle):  http://amzn.to/2rWF6Ia OPTION 2 : stabilized 360 camera. Insta360 Air ($129)  Type C   or  Micro USB  is a 360...

New Garmin Virb 360 sample shows unique stabilization mode

Image
DCRainmaker posted a new sample from the Garmin Virb 360, this time highlighting one of the Virb's stabilization modes, called "Follow" which is smart enough to maintain a view toward the direction of movement, an incredibly useful feature. Here is the video: To understand Virb's follow stabilization, let me contrast that with the conventional image stabilization in the Insta360 Nano , Insta360 Air and Xiaomi Mi Sphere :  on these three cameras, when the camera is stabilized, then it will hold that view regardless of where the camera is turned.  This is excellent for providing maximum stability. But what if you are moving and you want the camera to keep facing the direction where you're moving?  On the Nano, Air and Mi Sphere, the app itself won't be able to adjust the view.  It is possible to use software to re-set the heading every time I change my direction, but it's tedious and won't look natural. The Virb's follow mode is unique in that the h...

You can now preorder the Virb 360! 12 things to know before preordering

Image
The new Garmin Virb 360 is now available for preorder on Amazon or B&H Photo .  But before you preorder it, here are some things you ought to know: 1.  You can only get 5.7K video if you stitch the video with expensive third party desktop software such as Autopano or Video Stitch.  (According to DC Rainmaker, the Virb 360's desktop software, Virb Edit, will be updated "in the near future" to allow stitching of the 5.7K files.) Regardless of whether you use third party software or a future version of Virb Edit, stitching 5.7K is a time-consuming process.  Stitching 5.7K video will take a while, depending on your desktop processor and your RAM (expect it to take hours for around 30 minutes of footage). 2. Since Virb has no desktop software for stitching 5.7K video yet, the buttery smooth stitching you see in Garmin's 5.7K videos appear to be stitched using third party apps.  There's no guarantee that you can get that same quality of stitching if ever Virb Edi...

Garmin is launching the Virb 360, a waterproof 360 camera with 5K 360 video

Image
GPS and adventure equimpent manufacturer Garmin is launching the Virb 360, a rugged, waterproof fully spherical 360 camera with 5K 360 video on May 24, 2017.  Here's what we know so far. Key specifications and features so far: - two lenses - field of view: fully spherical - video resolution: 5K - Waterproof to 10 meters, probably without an additional housing - 360 audio - Wi-Fi - G-Metrix captures action data (such as temperature, altimeter, etc.) and may be able to overlay it on the 360 video. Here is a teaser video: So far, on paper, this looks like the camera that people were hoping for the Nikon Keymission 360.  I'm somewhat concerned that the distance between lenses looks quite large.  I hope the stitching is up to par.  I also hope that the stitching in underwater videos takes refraction into account. Other features that I am SPECULATING that it will have: - shockproof up to 2 meters, possibly with replaceable lenses - live streaming - in-camera stitching, po...
